Total cases and deaths

California’s public health department announced the first two cases of this new coronavirus in the state on Jan. 26. More than three months later, the state had reported close to 70,000 positive cases and close to 3,000 deaths from the disease the virus causes, COVID-19. The number of infected people, however, is assumed to be much larger because access to testing has been an ongoing challenge.

Cases and deaths by race, age and gender

Latinos, African Americans and Pacific Islanders are dying from the coronavirus at disproportionately higher levels in California. Pacific Islanders have the highest death rate of any racial group, and the proportion of COVID-19 deaths among African Americans is about twice their population representation. The race/ethnicity is unknown for about 4% of the deaths.

How many tests have been conducted?

Testing nationwide has lagged significantly. Initially labs in California reported they were missing ingredients for extracting genetic material; they also were low on testing supplies such as swabs. For weeks, only those with serious symptoms were being tested. On May 12, the state reported that 1 million Californians had been tested, and that an average of 35,000 tests were being conducted per day.

About the Data

The data comes from California Department of Public Health (CDPH) datasets publicly available on the California Health & Human Services Agency's Open Data portal. Testing data also comes from CDPH. California now reports the total number of new tests each day, rather than the new unique number of people tested. Tests data are updated daily around midnight (PST)

Case and death numbers are retreived each day around noon. Project Roomkey data is updated irregularly.

Population data is based on the 2018 American Community Survey.

Any questions about the data can be sent to CalMatters health reporter Ana Ibarra.
